FESTIVAL OF NEW CINEMA AND DIGITAL CULTURE

SAVE THE DATE –

Abandon Normal Devices, 23-27 September 2009, Liverpool

Abandon Normal Devices (AND) is a new festival of Digital Culture and New Cinema, inviting us to consider what are our normal devices? And why and how might we abandon them?

AND kicks off 23 September 2009 in Liverpool with five days filled with screenings, exhibitions, public interventions, debates and workshops. Highlights of the festival include influential artists such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, The Yes Men, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Carolee Schneemann, Jamie King and DJ Spooky.

At the heart of AND lies a fascination with ideas about social, physical and technological norms, offering artistic approaches from the playful to the downright provocative, and featuring a distinctive emphasis on critique and ideas. A Northwest festival, AND will continue with future editions in Cumbria, Lancaster, Cheshire and Manchester.

AND is presented by FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) (Liverpool), Cornerhouse (Manchester) and folly (Lancaster). The festival forms part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy programme for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UNeECC General Assembly and Conference, Liverpool, 16-17 October, 2008

The University Network of the European Capitals of Culture (UNECC) has the pleasure to announce you the UNeECC General Assembly and Conference held on 16-17 October, 2008 in Liverpool, this year’s European Capital of Culture.

The title of the Conference is ‘Whose Culture?’. Please find registration details and the Programme of the Conference at the UNeECC website: www.uneecc.org

The deadline of registration is 15 September, 2008.

The Conference will be jointly hosted by Liverpool Hope University, the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. This unique collaboration clearly demonstrates how universities can and must contribute to the success of a European Capital of Culture programme.

The central theme of our conference is: Whose culture(s)?

University students and faculty, as well as cultural professionals active in past, present and future European Capitals of Culture will present papers in three different conference tracks:

1. European Capitals of Culture - whose culture? : high vs. popular culture;
cultural identity; centre vs. periphery; European culture vs. European (local?)
cultures.
2. European Capitals of Culture and their impact on culture(s): socio-cultural
impact of ECCs; ECCs as catalysts of cultural awareness; ECCs - fleeting events or
milestones?; ECC-bids, cultural competition and attraction.
3. Events and culture (non-academic track): Presentations about ECC-events and
cultural attractions of given ECCs.

The Liverpool conference will touch upon key issues emerging from the way culture is perceived and dealt with by the different stakeholders in European Capitals of Culture, e.g. cultural policy makers, the general public, local authorities, citizens, visitors and tourists, academics, artists etc. Given the academic objectives of the conference, presentations will focus on new insights into the functioning of European and international culture and the relevance of these insights for cultural policy makers.

Information and Registration
Online registration is requested on the UNeECC website: www.uneecc.org

The deadline of registration is 15 September 2008.

Martha Rosler Library at Site

Martha Rosler Library at Site

Private View: Friday, April 11, 2008 at 6pm

68 Hope Street, Liverpool

Comprised of approximately 7,700 titles from the artist's personal collection, the Martha Rosler Library was opened to the public by Anton Vidokle in November 2005 as a storefront reading room at e-flux, on Ludlow street in New York City. It has since traveled to Frankfurter Kunstverein, MuHKA, Antwerp, Unitednationsplaza, Berlin and Institut national d’histoire de l’art, Paris. The library will remain on view in Liverpool through 14 June and will travel to Stills in Edinburgh in the Fall.

"In an act of incredible generosity, one of America's most important living artists temporarily dispossessed herself of the vast majority of her personal library so that it could be made available for consultation. No borrowing was possible, but the eclectic ensemble of books on economics, political theory, war, colonialism, poetry, feminism, science fiction, art history, mystery novels, childrens books, dictionaries, maps and travel books, as well as photo albums, posters, postcards and newspaper clippings could be studied at will. Smart, decidedly political in orientation, often funny, and all over the place (in that way a perfect mirror of its owner), the library is packed with essential reading and titles that even your better bookstores would love to get their hands on. As the product of decades of avid reading, the contents of the library are both the source of Rosler's work and an installation/artwork that continues many of the concerns with public space, access to information and engaged citizenship that traverse her entire oeuvre."
--Elena Filipovic, Afterall, issue 15, Spring/Summer 2007

A personal library represents the private sphere of an individual, her way of acquiring and combining knowledge. Accumulation is the result of an intellectual inquiry that takes place in parallel with a more random search, which can lead us to unexpected textual, and therefore mental, spaces. Martha Rosler Library offers the visitor an opportunity to approach this open source of information with her or his own interests, and to create new affinities and connections between the elements of the library that add to more than the sum of knowledge contained in it. The bibliography, currently in process, can be accessed online at http://www.e-flux.com/projects/library

Talks

Martha Rosler Library project includes a series of informal public conversations, lectures and discussions which started in New York and continued at all its venues.

Saturday 12 April, 1pm: Martha Rosler and Anton Vidokle in conversation.

Tuesday 13 May, 6.30pm: Simon Sheikh, curator, critic, and director of critical studies, Malmo Art Academy, Berlin/Copenhagen.

Thursday 16 May, 6.30pm: Centre of Attention is Pierre Coinde and Gary O'Dwyer.

Monday 2 June, 6.30pm: Shepherd Steiner, art historian and theorist, and Maria Hlavajova, curator and director of BAK, Utrecht.

Admission is free. All are welcome.

Publication

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication including interviews with Martha Rosler and Anton Vidokle by Stephen Wright, and an essay by Elena Filipovic.

7 @ The Anglican

7 @ The Anglican
27 March - 11 April 2008
Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, War Memorial Chapel (8am - 6pm everyday), free.

7 @ The Anglican is the latest exhibition of Liverpool based artists, the '7 @ Group'. After meeting and forming on the LJMU Fine Art course during 2006, the group, all of whom have recently graduated, have exhibited together numerous times across Liverpool. This latest exhibition at the magificant setting of the Anglican Cathedral, will see three new members, Alice Roberts, Kirsty Evans and Keiron Finnetty exhibit alongside six original members.

The artists are not brought together by a common theme or method of working, but by chance and are driven onwards by the spirit of exploration and collaboration. The relationships between the artists - whether intentional or co-incidental - and their dissimilarities are evident and both equally vital to the reception of the works.

This presentation of individual works within a group context offers singular contemplation of the work as well as a overall collective judgement. This double entendre allows both the uniqueness and disparateness of the works to be appreciated and the overall aims and desires of the artists to be acknowledged.

The 7 @ Group are;

Hannah Fray
Kirsty Evans
Jane Hughes
Keiron Finnetty
Kathryn Kimber
Anne Marie Prior
Alice Roberts
Becky Swift
Jack Welsh

Liverpool Reads

On Thursday 6th March, World Book Day, Liverpool will launch its fourth annual reading adventure! Author Mal Peet will be in the city to celebrate the distribution of thousands of books across Liverpool – 10,000 copies of Keeper, a novel about a poor South American logger's son who learns to become a World Cup-winning goalkeeper so good he is almost unbeatable, and 3,000 copies of Tamar, which is about the Dutch resistance in the Second World War – secrets, lies, love and espionage.

Liverpool Reads is a city-wide reading adventure where each year, books are distributed for free across the city and a programme of outreach activity, author events, reading groups and much more, is coordinated to accompany the big read. This year, the initiative is being jointly sponsored for the first time by Cobalt Housing and Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT).

2008 is the National Year of Reading as well as Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture and author Mal Peet is proud to be in the city for its celebrations:

“Books are free travel passes for journeys through space and time, and it’s a brilliant, radical idea on the part of Liverpool Reads to distribute them to the people of Liverpool. And I feel hugely honoured that in 2008, the National Year of Reading and the year in which Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture, my books have been chosen as the City Reads. All it will take now for my happiness to be complete is either Liverpool or Everton winning the Premiership and the Cup. (One each would do!)”

Pick up a free copy of Keeper from your local library – just take one of the coupons printed in Liverpool Echo on the 6th, 7th, and 8th March along to participating Liverpool libraries. Please see www.liverpoolreads.com or call 0151 794 2291 for a list of participating libraries. The launch will take place at Central Library at 6pm on Thursday 6th March – please note, tickets are now sold out.

the Liverpool Art community decided to make it a weekend-long celebration!

On March 8th and 9th, various art galleries and artists in Liverpool are organising special
events or giving you special offers e.g. discount on artworks & goods, free gifts, welcome
refreshment upon arrival or lucky draw etc.

Review of the 2007 Events:
http://www.artinliverpool.com/blog/blogarch/2007/03/39_art_day_2007.php

What is 39 Art Day on March 9th ?
39 Art Day (www.39art.com) was initiated by a Japanese artist Yoshiaki Kaihatsu ( www.yoshiakikaihatsu.com )
in 2000 to foster the appreciation of contemporary art in Japan, the country where support for contemporary
art is still weak at best, if not altogether absent. In Japanese, "thank you" rhymes with 3/9 (san-kyuu),
because there is no "th" sound in Japanese and the Japanese people tend to pronounce "th" as "s."
Thus, 39 Art Day is on March 9th.

A number of art galleries/spaces, as well as individual artists and internet-based entities around the globe
are offering special tie-in events on March 9th. The aim is to encourage people to enjoy a gallery-crawl
and think about art on the day.? Participants are from Japan, Germany, Ireland, USA, Hong Kong, Netherlands and UK.

Liverpool was the first UK city to join in 2007, organised by Artinliverpool.com.

The Reader at the Bluecoat

On Saturday 15th March, as part of the re-opening of the Bluecoat, The Reader Organisation (based at the University of Liverpool) is running a workshop that aims to help you cope with some of life’s difficulties. Members of The Reader team will offer advice and possible solutions to your problems or contemporary issues. The Reader Clinic will turn to the pages of novels and poetry n order to find some answers. "My boss tells me he loves me but there’s another, and she’s so beautiful. I can’t work out what I should do, my heart tells me one thing and my head another …”

What book could possibly help with such a problem? Perhaps Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre?

How about this predicament: “I am a tall, gangly lad and I keep tripping over my own
arms and legs. None of the other kids will let me play football. What can I do?” Solutions to this problem can be found in Liverpool Reads’ book for 2008, Keeper by Mal Peet. From Shakespeare’s Richard III, we may be able to identify certain similarities with our own PM Gordon Brown and that of Richard, the future king: “Now is the winter of our discontent…”

How can books help?

Bring your concerns, questions or dilemmas to the Bluecoat Arts Centre on Saturday 15th March, 2.30– 3.30 (just turn up at the venue, no ticket required) and meet the editors of The Reader magazine and members of The Reader Organisation as they host this special event to offer advice with the help of some great books. You can also hear more about The Reader Organisation’s projects, including the nationally acclaimed ‘Get Into Reading’ project and learn about the background of Blake Morrison’s feature article in The Guardian.
